Honoring Daneise

Daneise Nelson was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2005. As I thought about her young children who are similar ages to my own, naturally the news was devastating. Since Daneise also happens to be my best friend, Amy's, sister-in-law, I would receive regular updates about how she was doing throughout the course of her treatment. Sometimes the updates were positive and sometimes they were not.

Imagine my joy when Amy informed me that Daneise would be receiving her final chemotherapy treatment in December 2006. As a gift for her, Daneise's family commissioned me to create a canvas design. Since it was to be a surprise, through the covert help of her husband, Brad, and her sister, Karalynne, I received pictures of Daneise before, during, and after her treatment.

I am extremely honored that I was given this opportunity to participate in the celebration of Daneise's strength, courage, and, most importantly, her survival.

A note from Daneise:

"Hi Karmel, Just wanted to thank you for the beautiful canvas portrait that you did for me...per my family request.

It is sooooooooo incredible!!! I love it. I actually don't really love the pictures...of me...but honestly that is what it was like and so I have to just love them.

It is hanging above my fireplace in the family room. I love having the whole family in the middle.

It is a very emotional picture for me. Every time I really pause to read the words etc...it is hard. What beautiful words and poem you selected.
Honestly every time someone comes over they say something about it. My friend that was diagnosed a few months ago came over...and of course just bawled.

I love having the canvas where I can see it and helps me to remember all that I have gone through. You think you will remember everything but you don't. Your mind is so clouded with drugs. I love sitting looking at it and remembering those "tough" days.

Karmel...it is so perfect. Thanks so much for all of your long hours and work on it!! I will cherish it forever!!!"

If you would like to honor a loved one with a special layout like Daneise's, Karmel Design will donate a portion of the proceeds to the Susan G. Komen Foundation on behalf of your loved one.
